Literary Essay
I wrote a essay about the story read at literature class, "The Prision" by Bernard Malamud. Here is my work:
"The prision"
written by Bernard Malamud is about a man who works in a candy store, and one
of his cotumers is a little girl who steals from him. In this essay the themes
of this story, which are "Life as a prision" and "Hope for a
change" will be analized.
In the theme "Life as a
prision" Tommy Castelli feels his life is a prision because he is married
to the woman he does not love (Rosa) and he has to work in a place he
does not want to (he wanted to be a shoemaker) This can also make reference to
the fact that Tommy's uncle is in prision. "He cursed the candy store and
Rosa and cursed, from it's begginig, his unhappy life." (p. 156)
In the theme "Hope for a change" Tommy wants the
little girl to chane so she does not suffer everything Tommy suffered. Also
because Tommy wants to change his life. "He would leave two bars on the
plate and put in the wrapper of one note she could read when she was alone. He
tierd out on paper mang messages to her, and the ne that seemed best the
cleanly printed on a slipped it under the wrapperr of one chocolate bar. It
said, 'Don't do this anymore or you will suffer your whole life." (p. 158)
"Life as a prision" and "Hope for a
change" were the themes analized in this essay. In my opinion, these
themes t only represent very well the story, but also they make me want to be a
better person.
